Meet Shannon Chieng

Asia Pacific, I Am Jet, Maintenance, Singapore

We introduce #IAMJET employee, Shannon Chieng, Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in Singapore

Shannon, how long have you worked for Jet Aviation?

It depends how you look at it, but as of March 2nd, I've been working for the company as a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer for 4 years.

How did you come to Jet Aviation?

I became part of Jet Aviation through the acquisition of Hawker Pacific. I joined Hawker Pacific – Malaysia as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in 2015, working on King Air aircraft for 2.5 years. In 2017, I transferred to Hawker Pacific – Singapore as a Licenced Aircraft Maintenance Engineer for the Dassault Falcon range of aircraft (Falcon 900, Falcon 2000, Falcon 7X).

Can you briefly describe your job?

As a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, I am accountable for the day-to-day maintenance of aircraft and projects as directed by the Hangar MRO supervisors and Director of Maintenance. During our work, it is our job to ensure the quality, safety and proper environment for the tasks performed. We also have to ensure all tasks are performed in accordance with the manuals, using good maintenance practices and in compliance with the Civil Aviation Regulations for appropriately registered aircraft. In addition, we cooperate with the Maintenance Planner and the Quality Representative to ensure the work progresses smoothly. All of these efforts help ensure our customers are satisfied when their aircraft are redelivered.

“I enjoy the practical part of applying technical knowledge to fix aircraft defects. Working with the team to deliver an aircraft in its best condition is immensely satisfying”

What one word would describe how you approach your job?

One word to describe how I approach my job would be enthusiastically.

Can you describe a typical day?

A typical day for me begins with morning meetings at which I am assigned tasks or projects. Throughout the day, I complete various maintenance duties, including coordinating projects; segregating tasks;  troubleshooting defects;  ordering parts; liaising with project managers, planners, quality staff and customers; and ensuring safe and correct functioning of the aircraft systems.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love troubleshooting defects and solving them, as well as working together with my colleagues. We all support each other and it's very rewarding when we are able to deliver an aircraft together in its best condition and see the customer is happy with our service.

And what do you enjoy about working for Jet Aviation?

Being able to learn and experience new things at work. I really enjoy the practical, hands-on aspect of engineering and like to apply technical knowledge while managing tasks.

What are the main challenges you face in your role?

The main challenge I face in this role are time constraints. For example, when we have to deliver the aircraft within a time period specified by the customer. This we manage by constantly trying to improve coordination and planning between the engineers, project managers, purchasers and the customer.

The other main challenge I face in this role is the long working hours. As a manager, I am responsible for ensuring each task is completed. We have to supervise the entire project until it has been released to service.

If you could describe working at Jet in three words, what would they be?

Friendly, challenging and fun. It's a very friendly environment and there are often departmental events or get-togethers so employees can bond with their colleagues and get to know others with whom they seldom interact. The job is definitely quite challenging, too. We are given opportunities to take on different responsibilities; there are always new aircraft platforms and new procedures to learn; and, of course, the job is quite physical in nature. But it's also a lot of fun!
