Steering VVIP Innovations with HoloLens and Augmented Reality
As we strive towards creating the ultimate customer experience, our engineering and production teams are committed to pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible in VVIP completions. Marco Crescenzi, Director PMO Large Aircraft in Basel, leads the AR/VR Working Group as part of the Innovation Steering Commitee, and was instrumental in introducing the HoloLens.
In the video below, Marco shows us more about what the HoloLens can do and how we use it.
“We started using the HoloLens in completions projects in Basel. We have found it really useful to enhance our interactions with the customer at various stages of the process”
"The potential of the device is huge and it’s open to many further developments," explained Marco in an interview last year. "We started using the HoloLens in completions projects in Basel. We have found it really useful to enhance our interactions with the customer at various stages of the process, for instance, during reviews, we can overlay renderings and drawings over items in Production or installed inside the aircrafts, offering an engaging experience that helps customers in the decision-making process. Similarly, during the travel restrictions of COVID, we needed to find a way for customers to be at the site for key quality gates, when they couldn’t physically visit us.
"There are many more applications as well. A user can save notes or instructions directly into the environment, and attach that information to specific places or details. This makes it great, and much more efficient, for the sharing of visual information that would otherwise have to be photographed, uploaded and emailed. You can also add images or diagrams to physical reality pieces or parts, offering greater clarity and additional explanation of a task, or simply enhancing the user’s experience of a space."
Based on the use of Augment Reality (AR), a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user's view of the real world, this technique is a great asset and offers us flexibility, relevance and adaptation to a rapidly evolving world. Within Jet Aviation, we are using the Microsoft HoloLens 2, consisting of a pair of AR goggles. A person is wearing the HoloLens in the environment to be reviewed, and the customers connected on a video call can see holograms superimposed on the items under inspection.
