Taking Environmental Impacts Down a Notch with Book & Claim
Matt and Robin from Diamondo Earthrounding are in the Caribbean now after completing their tour of western U.S. states earlier this month, including visits to our Van Nuys, Scottsdale, and Houston facilities. We had a few minutes to connect with their Project Manager, Alexander El Khawaja, who shared some surprising but important insights.
In circling the globe in a five-seater Diamond 50 aircraft, Matt and Robin hope to connect and promote the potential of readily available sustainable technologies to support sustainable aviation in different climatic conditions. They’ve already completed more than 50 of their some 70 stops in their world tour and have seen and learned a great deal along the way, with highlights including stops at a solar panel farm in Dubai, and a fully sustainable airport in Uttar Pradesh, India.
“In places like Dubai, where they average 8-10 hours of sunshine per day year-round, a solar farm using photovoltaic panels is a clever way to capitalize on local climatic conditions to generate clean energy,” said El Khawaja. “We also see aviation companies investing in their facilities, increasing structural resilience with LEED construction practices, using more efficient lighting and plumbing technologies, and sourcing materials locally. Other effective sustainable efforts include expanded use of electric pushback vehicles.
“While aviation companies around the world are actively engaged in various initiatives to help reduce their environmental footprint, we have also observed some misapprehension around Book & Claim in particular, with some journalists interpreting Book & Claim as simply an offsetting practice doesn’t directly, or immediately, support the reduction of CO2 emissions,” said El Khawaja.
Joao Martins, Jet Aviation’s VP Regional FBO Operations Europe, GM Zurich, and Book & Claim sponsor of Diamondo Earthrounding’s world tour, believes more successful carbon reduction schemes, such as Book & Claim, take a wholistic approach to sustainability by reducing inputs throughout the value chain.
“By reducing carbon emissions at the outset, preventing them in the first place, we make a more significant and sustainable impact. Whereas Carbon-Offsets are used to compensate for emissions that have already been released, Book & Claim reduces the total amount of carbon released into the atmosphere by ensuring SAF is uplifted where it is available.”
“By reducing carbon emissions at the outset, preventing them in the first place, we make a more significant and sustainable impact,” said Martins. “Whereas Carbon-Offsets are used to compensate for emissions that have already been released, Book & Claim reduces the total amount of carbon released into the atmosphere by ensuring SAF is uplifted where it is available. And not only is our partner, SkyNRG verifying the total emission savings through our Book & Claim service, they are committed to supporting only sustainably sourced SAF.”
Jet Aviation recently signed the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2030 Ambition Statement, ‘Clean Skies for Tomorrow’ in support of accelerated production and adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to see SAF constitute 10% of the global fuel supply by 2030. The company has the privilege of helping Diamondo Earthrounding fly sustainably with SAF through its global Book & Claim service and looks forward to welcoming them next at their facilities in Palm Beach, Dulles and Teterboro.
